Dr. Steven G. King
Dr. Steven G. King is a US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agency chair, an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Science, and the Director of Research and Writing Programs at the National Defense University’s Eisenhower School. He teaches strategic leadership, microeconomics, business strategy, several electives, and the Transportation Industry Study program.
A Decade at DHS
Steve has been an executive at DHS since its creation, serving as a Division Director at NPPD’s Office of Infrastructure Protection. During his tenure at DHS, Steve was recognized at the White House for his “dedicated service and technical contributions toward the development of Executive Order 13546, optimizing the security of biological select agents and toxins.” He authored significant portions of the nation’s first federal chemical security regulations (CFATS) and, later, led the implementation of the interagency Nationwide Suspicious Activity Reporting Initiative for nationally critical infrastructure. As the Department’s first Geospatial Portfolio Manager, Steve led the overall governance and alignment of all geospatial (location-based) programs within DHS, and helped create the first agency-wide office for GIS at FEMA headquarters.
Additional Activities
Steve’s prior experience includes working as a local law enforcement officer and he has over 20 years of experience as a firefighter and Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic. He currently volunteers at a busy fire department in northern Virginia. In addition to numerous firefighting, emergency medical services, law enforcement, technical rescue, and hazardous materials related certifications, Steve is board certified in security management as a Certified Protection Professional (CPP), certified in homeland security, level five (CHS-V), a Certified Scrum Master (CSM) in agile project management, a certified GIS Professional (GISP), and a Project Management Professional (PMP). Steve is currently the Chair of the American Board for Certification in Infrastructure Protection.
Education
Steve holds a Doctor of Science in Information Systems and Communication, a Master of Science in Biodefense, a Master of Business Administration, and an undergraduate degree in Emergency Services Administration. He has been published in several peer reviewed academic journals and popular magazines. He completed the Naval Postgraduate School’s Homeland Security Executive Leaders’ Program, the Federal Executive Institute’s flagship course, Leadership for a Democratic Society, and was a 2010 Senior Executive Fellow at Harvard University.
